Affordable housing and Hazelwood's next chapter

In some ways, Hazelwood's story is a lot like the stories of other Rust Belt communities. It has disinvestment, job loss, businesses closing and people moving away.

But that is not the whole story.

The whole story is much bigger and more complicated. It is something every child, teen, parent, aunt, uncle and grandparent in Hazelwood holds part of and weaves together.

Your part of the story may be the jokes you tell around the kitchen table with people you love. It could be the way you secretly shovel the snow off of your neighbor’s sidewalk, or the joy of blasting your favorite song with your windows open on a summer afternoon. Maybe it is the smell of meat on the grill with your special marinade, or how you hold your little cousin’s hand when she’s crossing the street.

That story, and all the parts of it that live and grow in the people of this neighborhood, is why Hazelwood Initiative is committed to development without displacement.

Everything we do revolves around making it possible for the many people who make this place so special — and their children and grandchildren — to live, grow and thrive here for as long as they want to.

Affordable housing is essential to that mission. As we buy and renovate homes to sell to low- and moderate-income families, as we preserve and update affordable rental units, Hazelwood Initiative is working to make sure everyone in this community has a safe, healthy and affordable place to call home.

At the end of this article, you will find the Hazelwood Initiative Affordable Housing Resource Guide, a collection of affordable housing resources that we hope will help you meet your specific needs, goals and dreams. Whether you want to rent or become a homeowner, if your utility bills are too high or your home needs expensive repairs, there are resources for you. We want to make sure you are here to write Hazelwood’s next chapter.
