The Scoop, an exceptional ice cream store at 5384 Mifflin Road in Lincoln Place, serves premium soft serve and hard pack ice cream. They have Dole Whip and frozen yogurt, a strawberry shortcake sundae, a Nancy B’s Chocolate Chip Cookie sundae and the “Life’s Little Sweet Revenge” sundae made with peanut butter cookies. The Lincoln Place Sundae is half sundae and half milkshake. This year’s exciting menu addition is the Dubai sundae, made with Dubai chocolate with its unique flavor of pistachio and kataifi (shredded phyllo dough). All the sundae portions are quite generous.
The Scoop’s menu is extensive, offering ice cream in cups or one of many types of cones, shakes and floats, hard pack ice cream and yogurt. There are even Nancy B’s ice cream sandwiches. You can also customize your own concoction. As the end of summer nears, they offer a pumpkin roll sundae and pumpkin pie ice cream. They also decorate the green space around the building with outrageous Halloween decorations that the kids love.
For years the property was an empty lot. The Sailor brothers, Jim and twin brothers Tim and Tom (affectionately known as TimTom to their Lincoln Place friends) purchased the land from the Catholic Diocese. Roughly 10 years ago, they built the ice cream store.
The Scoop opens on April 1 each year. Their hours are Monday through Thursday from noon to 9 p.m. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. They do not have a definitive closing date but stay open as long as the weather permits. There is plenty of parking, and picnic tables to enjoy your ice cream. They even have a drive-through window for convenience.
They hire locally and many of their employees come back each year. The service is great with attentive and friendly employees. For the past couple of years, The Scoop has provided ice cream to South Allegheny High School for the movie nights at the end of the school year. They even sold hard pack ice cream at the Steelers camp one year.
For the past four years, Lincoln Place has held a community yard sale. The Scoop has generously allowed participants to set up their booths on the green space free of charge. They have said they hope that someday the space could be used for a farmers’ market.
Looking for a treat? Next time you are driving on Mifflin Road, pull over for some of the best ice cream you can get. Check out The Scoop on Facebook.
