The Pittsburgh Figure Skating Club hosts the learn-to-skate classes at Schenley as the major fundraising event for the nonprofit’s support of figure skating in the region. Year-round indoor rinks are located in the suburbs, making it logistically hard for city kids to try out skating. The club’s program at Schenley has addressed this issue. The recent addition of the rink at the Armory adds to the access, giving kids a chance to give skating a try.

City officials are debating proposed changes to Mayor Ed Gainey’s inclusionary zoning reforms. In October, Pittsburgh City Council voted 5-4 to rewrite reforms he first proposed in September 2024 along with other zoning legislation to combat Pittsburgh’s affordable housing crisis.

The Nov. 18 Greater Hazelwood community meeting created space for discussion about a proposed duplex to be built near the corner of Tullymet and Monongahela streets, an upcoming green industry job fair, and news of a zoning change for the riverfront.

Ella Meredith lives in the home where she grew up from the age of 13 on Renova Street. It was her grandmother’s house then, and now it’s hers. Her “Granny,” Ella Spears, raised her and her sister, Charlene, since early childhood. After their grandfather died, their mother wanted to make sure Granny was not lonely, so the two girls went to live with her.

A food scarcity crisis gained national attention in November when families who normally get help with groceries through public assistance did not receive it because of the government shutdown. But food security advocates in Hazelwood said the real crisis is how many families struggle to get enough food on a regular basis.
