The June 16 Greater Hazelwood community meeting saw a slightly lower attendance than normal because it had been changed from its usual second-Tuesday date. On June 9, a public meeting took place focused on the Elizabeth Street bridge; participants on June 16 heard about that. They also got an update on the renovation of Lewis Playground and learned about water issues and what they can do about them.

On April 26, Hazelwood community members filed an appeal against a permit reissued to the recycling plant at 50 Vespucius St. The permit gives the plant’s owner, Republic Services, state approval to add a waste transfer station.

Feb. 12 was a cold, gray day in Pittsburgh, but at the Hazelwood Healthy Active Living Community Center a cheerful, warm vibe was happening. The center at 5344 Second Ave. held an open house for Greater Hazelwood and surrounding communities. Longtime Pittsburgh residents know the center as the “Old Car Barn.”

Pittsburgh’s City Planning Commission voted on 4-2 Nov. 18 to approve rezoning land along Hazelwood’s riverfront. But first, the two dissenting commissioners expressed concerns.

City officials are debating proposed changes to Mayor Ed Gainey’s inclusionary zoning reforms. In October, Pittsburgh City Council voted 5-4 to rewrite reforms he first proposed in September 2024 along with other zoning legislation to combat Pittsburgh’s affordable housing crisis.

The Nov. 18 Greater Hazelwood community meeting created space for discussion about a proposed duplex to be built near the corner of Tullymet and Monongahela streets, an upcoming green industry job fair, and news of a zoning change for the riverfront.
