A food scarcity crisis gained national attention in November when families who normally get help with groceries through public assistance did not receive it because of the government shutdown. But food security advocates in Hazelwood said the real crisis is how many families struggle to get enough food on a regular basis.

In March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began, nursing homes closed to visitors for what was supposed to be a 14-day quarantine. When Greenfield native JoAnne Klimovich Harrop got the news, she knew where she needed to be. She left behind her husband, her South Hills home, and her job as a journalist in the busy TribLive newsroom, to move into the Charles Morris nursing home with her 93-year-old mother.

The Oct. 14 Greater Hazelwood hybrid community meeting saw lively discussions about land use throughout the neighborhood and city. A lifelong resident proposed building a year-round baseball facility below the tracks, and staff from the Department of City Planning invited feedback about the Adopt-A-Lot program and expanding the greenway system.
